On Saturday, friends, family and military members gathered in the base chapel to say farewell to Russell Desvignes, former Tuskegee Airman and recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal. Mr. Desvignes earned his wings as a bomber pilot on November 17, 1944, in the then-segregated Army Air Corps. He served honorably until 1946. Mr. Desvignes passed away on October 4, at the age of 87. An F/A-18D Hornet from the Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, Calif., conducted the initial certification of the south end retractable barrier at March Air Reserve Base, Calif. Brig. Gen. James Melin, 452nd Air Mobility Wing commander, and Rees Lloyd, attorney and guest speaker, stand as the honor guard plays taps.  Friends, family members and coworkers from March Field turned out Sept. 21, to participate in the annual MIA/POW ceremony at the cultural center. The guest speaker for the event was Rees Lloyd and among the many distinguished guests in attendance were three former prisoners of war. In addition to traditional ceremonial procedures, the poem In Memories Loving Arms was read by Staff Sgt. Aja Smith. After the ceremony, guests were treated to food and drinks outside on the lawn. Troops and their family members were treated to a full spread during the picnic; hamburgers, hot dogs, sides, chips, dessert and a variety of beverages. The picnic is an annual event organized by the Riverside and Moreno Valley Chambers of Commerce along with the help of local volunteers.
