The 101 Critical Days of Summer, which began on Memorial Day weekend, is winding down in theory, but because of sizzling temperatures in the Inland Empire that extend into the fall, we must remain vigilant. Sunscreen, grilling and outdoor activities are year-round in our area, so it’s good to keep these in mind when considering safety first.

Independence Day is just around the corner and many will be spending the day outside. Sunscreen is important in protecting your skin and eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. There are many sunscreen products available from which to choose, so do your research and find the products that are best for you and your family. Additions or alternatives to sunscreen are long sleeves and pants, and hats. If sunscreen is your go-to, follow the manufacturer’s directions for application for you and your kids. Also remember, there are natural options out there for those who are opposed to using products containing chemicals or fragrance. The skin is the largest organ on your body. Protect it.

Another consideration this weekend and going forward is the heat. Hydration is key. Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink water. Keep a close eye on children, the elderly and especially pets to ensure they are cool and hydrated. Know the signs, symptoms and treatments for heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, heat syncope and heat rash. (www.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/warning.html)

Remember, the ground sizzles when the sun beats down on it. If you can’t walk on the sand or pavement bare-footed, then your pets should not be walking on it either. Protect those fur-babies!

Grilling, parties and outdoor activities are the norm during the summer and especially during the Fourth of July weekend, so remember these safety tips:

  • Always follow the grill manufacturer’s instructions, and keep it a safe distance away from children, pets, fences, etc.

  • Practice proper food safety procedures for preparation and storage.

  • Drink alcoholic beverages responsibly.

  • Never let anyone drink and drive.

  • Always wear a helmet and follow basic biker safety instruction for the use of motorcycles and bikes.

  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
