10/3/2010 - MARCH AIR RESERVE BASE, Calif. -- During the month of September and October, we as Americans have the opportunity to pay tribute to the culture and hard work of Hispanic Americans.

Hispanic Heritage Month began on September 15, which is the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries. The month ends October 15, which is a few days after Columbus Day. This yearly observance was at first only a weeklong celebration approved by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968, and was later extended to a 30-day period in 1988 by President Ronald W. Reagan. On August 17, 1988, Hispanic Heritage Month was enacted into public law.

During Hispanic Heritage Month, we have the opportunity and privilege to experience the lives and stories of Hispanic Americans, and celebrate Hispanic culture and heritage. Today, in the 452nd Air Mobility Wing, 33 percent of our Airman report they are of Hispanic descent.

We appreciate the hard work of our Hispanic community. Hispanic Heritage Month is a time we should all reflect on the contributions made by Hispanic Americans throughout the history of our country and recognize the hard work and strength of Hispanic Americans.
