More than 15 Airmen from the 163rd Attack Wing celebrated Earth Day by picking up trash along the outside fence line near the front gate of March Air Reserve Base, California, on April 1, 2017.

Nearby drivers honked and waved from their cars to show support as the Airmen collected garbage that had accumulated along the fence line and in a storm drain.

The event was organized by Rising 6, the wing’s professional organization for Airmen through Tech. Sgts.

“Why would we want to have a trashy base?” asked Staff Sgt. Isabell Aceves, who serves as Rising 6 president.

Aceves noticed trash building up outside the base during a recent trip off base and decided to do something about it. She planned the cleanup event for the April unit training assembly to honor Earth Day, which is April 22.

“I wanted to do something good for the community and good for the base,” said Aceves.

The clean-up efforts were a great success, she said.

“Everyone felt better after the clean-up,” said Aceves. “30 minutes made a big difference, and I think we got most of it.”

Aceves and Rising 6 plan on maintaining the cleanliness of the gate.
