Since the tax center on base officially opened, our professionals have prepared more than 100 federal and state returns totaling nearly $159,000 in refunds and saving our March community more than $14,500 by offering this free service Monday through Friday and UTAs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Our volunteers are locked and loaded to help you prepare and electronically file your federal and state income tax returns - all at no charge! If you provide a bank routing and account number, the IRS should have your refund back to you in less than two weeks. Here is a list of what to bring with you when you visit so we may provide you the best quality service:

➤ Proof of identification
➤ Social Security cards for you, your spouse and dependents and/or a Social Security number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration
➤ Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents
➤ Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-MISC from all employers
➤ Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
➤ Mortgage Statement/Property Tax Documents (if app)
➤ A copy of last year's federal and state re-turns if available
➤ Proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers for Direct Deposit, such as a blank check
➤ Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider's tax identifying number (the provider's Social Security number or the providers business Employer Identification Number)
➤ To file taxes electronically, for a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be pre-set to sign the required forms or you must have a signed Power of Attorney.

We've noticed a few issues with some clients not knowing their dependent's Social Security number. It is extremely important that each person use the correct Social Security number and the correct name associated with that Social Security number. The most accurate information is usually located on your original Social Security card. Each year, hundreds of thousands of returns are delayed in processing, or credit/deductions are disallowed because names and Social Security numbers do not match Social Security Administration records. To prevent processing delays in paper returns and rejected electronically filed returns, volunteers check the accuracy of each Social Security number, as well as the spelling of the name associated with the number. If you do not have a Social Security number for you or a dependent, you should complete Form SS5, Social Security Number Application. This form should be submitted to the nearest Social Security Administration Office.

If you or your dependents are not eligible to get a Social Security number, you may need an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Please contact your local Social Security Office for details on obtaining this number.

If you end up owing money to the IRS, there are payment options available when using IRS e-file. If you owe, you may make a payment (by April 17) by authorizing an electronic funds withdrawal from a checking or savings account, paying by credit card, or by check or money order (payable to the United States Treasury) using Form 1040-V, Payment Voucher.

If you are interested in being trained as a volunteer, please call us or e-mail us. The IRS provides on-line tax training and we can get you certified to become one of the elite volunteers of the March VITA Center! Next week's topic will be tax issues associated with Permanent Change of Station orders.
