August is historically the highest casualty month of the 101 Critical Days of Summer as noted by Maj. Gen. Roggero. Add to that our unprecedented schedule of events here at March this month; Unit Compliance Inspection, LCAP, HSI, troop and cargo movements, plus our normal flying operations. We must remain vigilant of our risk management on and off duty to protect our resources. Please use any and all opportunities you have to stress risk management and mishap prevention to your members/employees. Off duty traffic accidents are still the leading cause of fatalities and we need to continue to stress this to our people and promote responsible behavior.

Alcohol consumption and/or excess speed are the overwhelming majority of the causes of these mishaps.

Here are some resources we have at our disposal for communicating with our people about safety:

Air Force Culture Assessment Safety Tool

The private motor vehicle, motorcycle, and drinking and driving surveys on this site are designed to give commanders at all levels keen insight on the safety culture of their organizations and has proven to be one of our best mishap prevention tools. www.afcast.org

Air Force families

Communicate with your Airmen's families directly. Recent focus groups revealed that spouses and family members want to be involved in the safety of their Airman.
