The 701st Combat Operations Squadron/ Army intramural basketball team put the finishing touches on a dominant season Feb. 16, beating the Communications/Logistics Readiness/Fourth Air Force combined team 59 - 47 in the base championship game.

The 701 COS/Army (15 - 1) team got off to a fast start, repeatedly hitting outside jump shots to build an early lead. Determination, hustle and consistent drives to the basket kept the Comm/LRS/4 AF (10 - 6) team in the game and, at halftime, the teams were separated by only two points.

Spectators remarked about the impressive defense both teams sustained throughout the first half.

That defense continued into the second half as the first minutes were a back and forth struggle to score points. The Comm/LRS/4 AF team kept playing hard and, six minutes into the half, they took their first lead.

At that point, the 701 COS/ Army team raised its intensity on defense and became more aggressive on offense. Outside shooting again gave the team momentum, as turnovers hampered the Comm/LRS/4 AF offense.

Ultimately, this last run proved too much for the Comm/ LRS/4 AF team.

The 701 COS/ Army team's only defeat this season was due to forfeit; they generally won big when they took the court.

The Comm/LRS/4 AF team gave them a run for their money in the base championship, however, keeping the outcome in question until the final minutes. An engaging game was fitting, given the nature of the season as a whole.

"Overall it was a good season," said Tech. Sgt. Erwin Kessman, a fitness center recreation assistant. "There were lots of exciting games, and this game was very competitive."
