Volunteers needed for Memorial Day ceremony Published April 13, 2009 By 452 AMW/PA 452 AMW/PA MARCH AIR RESERVE BASE, CALIF. -- Riverside National Cemetery is looking for several hundred volunteers for a very special Memorial Day holiday project. The Roll Call Project will take place at the cemetery around the clock during the week prior to the cemetery's annual Memorial Day ceremony. "There are more than 150,000 veterans buried here," said Cemetery Director Gill Gallo. "It is our intention to honor each one by reciting their name during the week." Gallo said that it will take more than 300 volunteers to accomplish this. At present, the plan is to have two volunteers, working in one-hour shifts, alternate in reciting the veterans' names, beginning May 18 and continuing until the ceremony begins at 9 a.m. on the morning of May 25. Gallo estimates that it will take nearly seven days to read all the names. "We are reaching out to the community to take part in this unique project," Gallo said. "Nothing like this has ever been done in the 30-year history of Riverside National Cemetery. This is a terrific opportunity for people in the surrounding communities to be a part of history while honoring our departed veterans." If you would like to be a part of the Roll Call Project or would like to recruit your military unit, veterans organization, family or sports team to take part, call the cemetery's public affairs officer, Jim Ruester, at (951) 653-8417 x877 or send an email, with the names of the volunteers, to james.ruester@va.gov.
