More than 40 members from March ARB participated in Read Across America. It's a national day celebrating and promoting reading and is sponsored by the National Education Association and the California Teachers Association. The goal is to inspire children to read and create enthusiasm for reading. Read Across America was celebrated in California on March 2 in honor of Dr. Suess's birthday.

Military and civilians showed their support by going to local elementary schools to read to the children. The ages of the children ranged from kindergarten to sixth grade.

"Guest readers were dispersed to local area schools to support the event. Others involved include firefighters, community leaders, a judge, doctors and junior high and high school students," said Jacqueline Hall, vice principal of Mark Twain Elementary.

The whole event was a great success. The children agreed, "It's been fun; I had a good time," said Austin, first grader.

Instilling the joys and rewards of reading was a central goal. When talking to the children, it's easy to see the goal was met. "I like to read and I liked having people read to us. It was fun," said Alyssa, kindergartner.
