The 2008 Western Riverside Regional Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) kicked off Oct. 14 with the goal of raising $300,000 by Nov. 21. March ARB's portion of that goal is $100,000, according to Capt. Mary Guest, CFC base project officer. She said CFC key workers at units throughout the base are distributing brochures that give Team March members the ABCs on how to give to the charities of their choice.

Campaign donations go to support charities that serve the hungry, the homeless, the sick, or the mentally/physically challenged.

"Basically, it's just a really great way that our folks on base can have the opportunity to donate to several thousand different organizations," said Capt. Guest. "They can pick an organization that's kind of near and dear to their hearts, or they can thumb through the brochure to find an organization that sounds interesting to them."

As in previous years, CFC organizers place a giant thermometer near the Main Gate so passersby can track the progress of March's $100,000 goal.

"I kind of look at this as an opportunity," said Capt. Guest. "This is not hitting people up for money, but it's giving them the opportunity to donate in a really focused way. The traditional folks can do the one-time donation and our full-time folks can do a payroll deduction through the year."

The CFC was established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy who wanted to provide service members and federal or postal employees a convenient way to donate to their favorite charities once a year.
