Group travels in time to 1930s
Master Sgt. John P. Hale escorts tour guests along Baucom Ave. in the historical district of the base. Sergeant Hale is as authentic as possible, wearing a cotton summer uniform that was standard for the time period. The entire uniform consists of a cotton long sleeve coat-front shirt with Master Sgt. chevrons and the General Headquarters Air Force shoulder patch. The breeches are semi-fitted and were worn until the Army officially changed to trousers in 1939. The leggings are wool puttees, which were adopted from the British who wore them in World War I because of their superiority to the previously worn canvas leggings. The boots are standard service boots which were worn beyond World War II. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Megan Crusher)

Riverside National Cemetery salutes military members on Memorial Day
Congressman Ken Calvert is presented with a U.S. flag after the flag folding ceremony by the California Army National Guard. He was the keynote speaker. The flag symbolized all the men and women who were buried in the cemetery. The 1st Marine Division Band Brass Quintet played the National Anthem and Taps during the ceremony. The Master of Ceremonies was author Tom Ruck, who wrote “Sacred Ground: A Tribute to America’s Veterans.” The book highlights 47 national cemeteries across the United States. Army Maj. Gen. Mike Schweiger, who served as deputy commanding general for support of American forces during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, represented the U.S. military members.
