A couple of “terrorists” operate a chemical lab during the biannual Power Demonstration conducted Dec. 13 by the four flights of the 452nd Civil Engineer Squadron at March Air Reserve Base, Calif. After hearing a siren, they quickly ran off, leaving evidence behind for Emergency Management personnel to sort through and identify. Tom Cawthon to retire after 34 years

Tom Cawthon, Chief of Civilian Personnel Flight, gives a farewell speech at his retirement ceremony at 452nd Military Personnel Flight, Dec. 16, after receiving a retirement certificate from Maj. Maureen McAllen, commander, 452nd Mission Support Squadron. Cawthon will retire Jan. 2 after 34 years of Air Force civil service, which includes 23 years in his current position at March Air Reserve Base, Calif. Once he retires, Cawthon said he may do some government contract work, and will be a volunteer soccer referee trainer with the AYSO in Redlands and throughout Southern California. He’s been a volunteer soccer referee for 20 years. “It’s been a privilege working with so many fine professionals over the years,” he said. “I will miss all of them, but I’m ready to move on with different things in my life.”

Pint-sized Honor Guard

‘SALUTE!’ Two-year-old Jacob Vo smartly executes commands given by his uncle, Tech. Sgt. Neil Ballecer, a member of the March Field Honor Guard. Jacob became the Honor Guard’s unofficial mascot this year after Sgt. Ballecer observed him standing at attention and imitating the guard’s movements during official functions. “He’d march around the house at home after the events, or he’d see a military commercial and stand and salute. He even memorized the Star Spangled Banner,” said Sgt. Ballecer. “I didn’t teach him a thing; he did it all himself.” So, the next time Sgt. Ballecer took Jacob to an event - the Annual Honor Guard Banquet in September - he dressed him in a mini “Air Force” Honor Guard uniform. “It was hard to match our Honor Guard uniform, but I bought a little blue suit,” said Sgt. Ballecer. “Then I went to a craft supply store, and I got some piping and sewed it on the wrist of the suit and the side of the pants; I sewed on some old buttons, and I gave him my wings. RECORD-BREAKING YEAR FOR CFC

March ARB not only surpassed its $100,000 goal for the 2008 Combined Federal Campaign drive, but hit a base record, according to Capt. Mary Guest, CFC base project officer. “We raised $119,254, which is the most money ever raised for CFC here at March ARB. I’m ecstatic!” March raised $101,000 last year. This year’s campaign began Oct. 14 and ended Dec. 5. The March campaign is part of the Western Riverside Regional Combined Federal Campaign, that sought to raise $300,000 this year.
