Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks at the ceremony awarding her the Congressional Gold Medal, June 15, 1999. Parks, known as the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement, was awarded the Martin Luther King Jr. Award by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal for her bravery to stand up to racial segregation by refusing to give up her bus seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama.
