Roadway gives perpetual honor to U.S. military
Veterans, March Air Reserve Base representatives and Riverside County officials clap after the unveiling of a road sign bearing the new name of a stretch of I-215 at a dedication ceremony at Riverside National Cemetery, June 4. The 4-mile stretch of road, which runs from Highway 60 (north) to the Ramona Expressway (south), will now be known as “Armed Forces Freeway.” The Caltrans-approved signs, paid for by Riverside supervisors, were installed this week. “These signs will be visible every day to motorists and serve as a reminder of the sacrifice our veterans have given for our country,” said Ken Rolene, Jr., assistant cemetery director. Col. Jeff Robertson, director of staff, Fourth Air Force, said,”This highway is a tribute to all our colleagues who lie here and whose sacrifice gave us our freedoms.” (U.S. Air Force photo by Maj. Tornado at March Air Reserve Base
Thursday, May 22, was a very unusual day in the Inland Empire, with tornadoes and large hail. We have gentlemen in this weather station who have been here 20+ years and have never seen a tornado at March. There were officially three tornadoes, one to our southeast and the twins spinning around each other between Oleander and Van Buren on the I-215, which overturned a semi tractor trailer and several train box cars -- as reported by Mr. Mark Ditter, weather services supervisor for the base. Main gate reopens
Brig. Gen. James Melin, 452nd Air Mobility Wing commander, cuts the ribbon to officially open the new visitor’s center. Jim Rossi, SSI project manager, left, Ryan Wood, acting base civil engineer, and Lt. Col. Cary Conners, 452nd Security Forces Squadron commander, join in the ceremony. The new roundabout requires drivers to pay attention to directional signs which lead them either into the base or to the parking lot of the visitor’s center. There also is a commercial truck inspection turnout and an exit base lane. Almost 100,000 vehicles a month will pass through the roundabout and visitor’s center which General Melin noted was the “Gateway to the Base.” (U.S. Air Force photo by MSgt. Stan Thompson, 163 RW/PA)

March gives Denton program a needed lift
On Jan. 3, in conjunction with the support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the 452nd Aerial Port Support Flight and 50th / 56th Aerial Port Squadrons personnel assisted with the upload of ten pallets (15 short-tons) of much-needed medical supplies onto a C-17 from the 729th Airlift Squadron. The Denton cargo was headed for Andrews Air Force Base, Md., with a final destination at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan. The Denton program allows the Department of Defense to provide space available transportation of humanitarian cargo at little or no cost to the donor. This is accomplished by utilizing U.S. military transportation exclusively. Authority to transport the cargo comes from the Denton Amendment program which allows donors to use space available on military cargo planes to transport goods to countries in need. The Department of State and DOD manage the program jointly. (U.S. Air Force photos by LaGina Jackson)

IN RETROSPECT 2007: A collective look at Team March's missions over the year
With coordination from the 452nd Aerial Port Support Flight, on May 22 the Antonov An-124 Ruslan, NATO reporting name Condor, uploads Joint Explosives Ordnance Disposal Rapid Response Vehicles (JERRVs) from Force Protection, Inc. here on the March flight line. The Cougar is a 12 ton mine protected armored patrol vehicle that has been used extensively to counter the Improvised Explosives Device (IED) threat in Iraq. Since the vehicle was first deployed in 2003, not a single Soldier or Marine has been killed while patrolling in a Cougar, despite more than 1,000 IED attacks on the vehicles. The 12-person APSF team is currently tasked to support the deployments and redeployments of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom for all branches of services and agencies based in the Southern California region.
